Eldorado Gold Corporation (ELD) is developing four mines in Halkidiki. It is estimated that they will produce 345.000 ounces by 2016. According to the Canadian company, Greece has the potential to be the biggest gold producer in Europe. On the other hand, local villages and environmentalists fight against mining. There is a constant fear that this project will adversely affect the local economy such as fishing, apiculture and tourism.
